Escape games are becoming quite popular in the U.A.E and I was recently invited by Phobia Dubai, in cooperation with Entertainer GCC, to check out their games in JLT.
At first, I was perplexed by how they’d manage to fit two escape games into a big office space and whether they would actually be engaging.
My inhibitions quickly vanished, though as I was locked into a dark room with my teammates and needed to figure out how to unlock a series of doors in a dark museum so that we got escape with the most valuable treasure over there, all in a set time of 1 hour.
We had to use every single trick seen in spy thrillers, from dodging laser beams to climbing through dark A.C. vents and using complex codes to hack computers with some Big Brother-style support from the game master through the room speakers as well. The whole design of the game was well thought-out and it was clear that the makers paid a great attention the design and layout of every room – I loved the complex backstory that the game had, as well, which just added to the whole cinematic feel of it.
Highs: Well-designed game with mind-crunching challenges and interesting props
Lows: No scare factor involved which the name Phobia might suggest
Verdict: Escape games are a must-try for anyone looking for a fun, out-of-the-box activity with their friends or co-workers and Phobia should definitely be at the top of your list!
